Whats New?

Gorillaz Video Screening : Gathered in a small studio in London’s Soho, you have to wonder what could possibly be so impressive about the new Gorillaz video that Britain’s journalists have been shepherded together for a screening. New single “On Melancholy Hill”...

David's Lyre : Masked troubadour, David's Lyre is, like his semi-hidden aesthetic, somewhat of a mystery at present. Although if fairness exists in the world at all...
Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...
Lunar Youth : Interview : Lunar Youth make the kind of music that makes your heart skip a beat as the emphasis on romance engulfs you in a warm flurry of emotion. It’s really rather lovely. Their nostalgic take on pop, reminiscent of the 80’s penchant for...

Wolf Gang : 'The King And All Of His Men'

Wolf Gang : 'The King And All Of His Men'

Released: 16th November 2009

Label: Hit Club Records

Delightfully catchy, astutely balanced and vocally sound “The King And All His Men” is certainly a track to appreciate. The latest from synth-pop eccentric Wolf Gang, it takes a decidedly more mainstream approach, yet losing nothing of it's accomplishment.

Resonate group vocals begin proceedings with main protagonist Max McElligott taking over with strong aplomb. Not spectacular yet more than listenable, his voice imposes on the melody without stealing the spotlight. Light keys provide the perfect background, whilst a simple drumbeat tops off the ensemble.

Although it would be easy to brush Wolf Gang of as just another electro artist to stumble across a synth and jump on the ever growing bandwagon, a delicate touch makes the track more sophisticated than it's potential colleagues in that league. Whilst sufficiently reliant on technology for it's basis, the synth is toned down to a subtle yet influential level, whilst a keyboard provides the main melody as opposed to it being computer generated. Such simple touches may seem irrelevant, yet the results are the key to making the track stand out from the rest.

And stand out it certainly does. With McElligot's astute execution and an unavoidably appealing melody, “The King And All Of His Men” becomes less of a face in the crowd, and more of a shining example to the rest.
