Tomb Crew : Q & A

Tomb Crew : Q & A

Tomb Crew are a crew that roll very deep. Their shows are renowned for being rowdy and they get a plethora of people behind the decks, but not all of them do a job; the majority are there to get the crowd going absolutely mental. We caught up with them to see how many actually are in the group, what we can expect from them soon and how many they could fit into a Smart car?!...

4or The Record: How many official ‘members’ of Tomb Crew are there?

Tomb Crew: [Laughs] at this moment in time, 3.

4TR: How many members of Tomb Crew could you fit in a Smart Car?

TC: It depends which members you put it first!

4TR: Tomb Crew roll deep, as everyone knows, but does having all these people around make touring a lot more fun?

TC: Definitely it does. I think we'd have gone mad by now if we'd have to endure all those long drives individually. But at the same time you can never get away from illa's farts…

4TR: Who does what role within the crew?

TC: To a certain extent we all do a bit of everything... but live obviously the DJs DJ and the MC’s MC and get the crowd going.

4TR: Which other DJ's/producer's can you count amongst your biggest fans?

TC: ermm, Doorly, Toddla T, Oneman, Mumdance, Rusko, AC Slater, Drop The Lime and DJ Yoda are a few and we're even bigger fans of them...

4TR: There seems to be more and more Tomb Crew t-shirt’s appearing – how did this come about?

TC: The first major event we organised as part of the Dot-to-Dot festival in Nottingham was a grime room with Boy Better Know, Slew Dem, Neckle Camp, Ruff Sqwad and a load of others... and Jamie just organised them as a kind of surprise, but it worked well!

Sim from Bantum designed them for us about 3 years ago, so big up to him!! He started it all...

4TR: You seem to be one of the bigger acts championing 'bmore', can you give us an insight into what bmore is?

TC: Bmore is club music in Baltimore, basically they have Hip Hop tunes at 90 BPM then they have the same song at 125 BPM for whatever genre you prefer...although we don’t play as much bmore as we used to we still love it...

4TR: Describe Tomb Crew in three words?

TC: Intelligent, sweaty and fun.

4TR: You touch on a bit of everything in your DJ sets. Is this a deliberate technique so everyone is happy?

TC: We literally play whatever we're feeling at the time, its never a case of trying to fit in all genres, simply what tunes we've been listening to. We’ve done a few total jungle sets and a few darker garage ones too, it depends on the line up of the night and when were playing. Plus some crowds like 4/4 and some like half time so we adjust to the audience to some extent.

4TR: Your gigs are famous for being very rowdy, have you ever had any serious accidents occur to you or the crowd?

TC: The most serious was at offset, but it was just one stupid idiot in the crowd who clearly wasn’t in the right place. Just got a bit too rowdy and the show was stopped. But 99.9% of people are there to have fun and get on with each other. Good rowdiness!

4TR: How do you chill out after gigs?

TC: We generally don’t get much time to chill out! There’s usually a 3 hour drive home from wherever we're playing and Jamie’s car has no stereo at the moment, so utter silence and then sleep before we get up to go play again!

4TR: How was your 2009?

TC: If I’m honest I cant even remember most of the year! We’ve been to some pretty amazing places and I think that’s of the one main things I’m going to take away from all of this.  We've been to France, Romania, Holland, Italy, Poland, Austria, Spain, Germany and loads more places and met so many amazing people and its still difficult to accept someone is paying you to do that!

It's tiring but worth it, and when people have heard of you in other countries its kind of mind-blowing! We’ve also started having some success with our productions which is incredible and to have people you respect play your tunes and complement you is pretty amazing.

4TR: What can we expect from Tomb Crew in 2010?

TC: Loads and loads and loads of productions. We’re working so ridiculously hard to catch up with the time we lost on not starting earlier.

4TR: Who should we be looking out for in 2010?

TC: Boogaloo Crew are going to do massive things, they've got some incredible productions coming and out there at the moment so definitely check them out!

And Numan a real young guy with a lot of talent from Manchester is smashing it at the moment. So many incredible productions, 2010 is his year.
