The Twang : 'Barney Rubble'

Released: 13th July 2009
Label: B-Unique
Two years after their debut album, West Midlands band The Twang return with a seemingly more polished and musically tidier sound.
'Barney Rubble' starts off with a laid back melodic build up, with light guitar chords accompanied by a drum beat soon after. Its nice to hear on this particular Twang song that vocalist Phil Etheridge isn’t talking(literally) utter nonsense like he does on arguably the bands most popular track to date, either way. His vocals work quite well on this song, The tone and pitch go hand in hand with the track’s music, which gives out a sort of heartfelt feel.
Lyrically you know what it’s about and it’s a rather ordinary approach. Vibes of ‘she’s leaving’ or ‘this repetitive nonsense that brings her down’ gives the impression of woman trouble. How original…
There’s not a lot of variety in this track. It all follows the rules of how a regular idealistic pop track should be made. The backing vocals on the chorus ‘What I really want is you’ is just horrible and cheesy to be frank. However despite this you do get the sense that this will be a popular tune throughout the summer months and will probably record a decent chart position.(not that that’s important, right kids?!).
To be fair many other bands in the indie/alternative bracket have failed to produce what they have claimed to want to have produced (most notably The Enemy) and at least the Twang haven’t echoed anything of major significance. It’s a safe bet type of a record.
All in all it’s an improvement on the bands exploits in 2007, despite its commercial success at the time. A neat and tidy opening single will hopefully be the platform for a better second album.
