The Officers: 'Red Chapter'

The Officers: 'Red Chapter'

'Red Chapter', the debut release from The Officers, marks the start of what could be a big year for the Leeds five-piece. Already championed by the likes of Alan McGhee, the Music and Kerrang - who recently voted this song their single of the week - they certainly have a lot of hype to justify, and this premiere goes some way to doing just that.

Immediately the song thumps into gear with the sort of panache and emphasis you perhaps wouldn't expect from a first release as vocalist Matt Southall's dark delivery gives an edge to an otherwise straightforward pop back-bone. What draws me further to this song is its production; clean, crisp song management that allows all aspects of this bands depth to feature prominently when required.

Synthesizers are used subtly and effectively to compliment a driving rhythm, creating a sound that emanates melodic darkness, something which seems to be the bands very intention.

Lyrically, one would hope the band have more to offer as at times during this song I felt the wording failed to quite match the level of expertise found within the music, but this remains the sort of record you can imagine creating quite a buzz at their live performances, one which certainly could propel them further into the music industry as they gather an ever-increasing following on the back of it.

Both radio and dance-floor friendly, 'Red Chapter' is a promising if not perfect start.

7/10
