The Horrors: 'Primary Colours'

Music wise, 2009 is pretty damn good. In fact, it’s probably the best in a long time. Now I know I’ve probably said “This is the album of the year!” about 5 different albums already but trust me on this one - The Horrors’ second album is at least in the top 3. I could give you my full top 5 already, but I don’t want to bore you.
Primary Colours is a masterpiece. A musical masterpiece that everyone should go out and buy when it is released on May 4th. And If this does not convert those who disliked The Horrors when they first came out, then I honestly don’t know what will!
The album begins with ‘Mirror’s Image’, which gets things off to a good start. Then it goes into ‘Three Decades’ which is, of course, brilliant. Third track ‘Who Can Say’ is the new single (the video is on YouTube!) and is my favourite off the entire album. I was rather excited that they’re releasing it as a single.
‘Do You Remember’ grabs you and throws you back into the 1960s. In fact, the whole album does exactly that. I know lots of people (fans and non fans of The Horrors) have said that this record sounds nothing like Strange House - some think that’s a good thing, others disagree. However what they do both have in common is a prevalent kind of “vintage” sound. A lot of bands try to copy this kind of 60s vibe in their music, and in the process make awful music. But The Horrors perfect it.
Some of you may think that all front man Faris does is shout, but that is a thing of the past. Oh yes, Faris can sing. Which adds to making the whole sound of this album near perfect, but not in a commercialised way - it doesn’t sound like they have been forced to sound a certain way to sell records, far from it.
Primary Colours will be an album that people talk about in many years to come. Maybe it’ll be ignored by the mainstream, maybe it’ll be regarded as album of the year - but whichever, trust me you need it in your life. Will it change it? Possibly….just possibly.
‘I Can’t Control Myself’ is probably one of the standout tracks on the album. The sound quality on my laptop is pretty crap to be honest, but I imagine it would sound amazing played full blast through decent speakers. Actually the album will sound better on vinyl, just to get that whole 60s sound blaring through. Background noise is beautiful ladies and gentlemen.
And finally, they close their sophomore record with ‘Sea Within A Sea’ which is 7 minutes of musical heaven and pure genius.
I tried my best to not be biased about this album, but I couldn’t help it! It is truly a masterpiece. If you weren’t keen on The Horrors when you first heard ‘Sheena Is A Parasite’ or if you don’t know if the new sound will work then do yourself a favour, and have a listen.
The Horrors are touring from the end of May, so I urge you to spend your emergency £10 on a ticket. I think seeing Primary Colours being performed live will be one of the best live experiences of this year.
