The Good Natured : 'Your Body Is A Machine'

Full of quirks and intricacies The Good Natured certainly have something new and interesting to offer. Your Body Is A Machine demonstrates good imagination as well as some fresh ideas, vital qualities in a fiercely competitive electro – based scene. Whilst these ideas are not always executed to their full potential, there is more than enough evidence that this can be rectified given time and practice.
Despite fitting into the electro genre fairly well, The Good Natured have a lot more to define their sound than just a loose generalisation. Whilst “I Pray” features heavy synth use and programmed drumming, it is skilfully worked around main protagonist Sarah's mild voice, softening the impact and allowing the vocals to encapsulate the listener. With a warmth that touches everything around it, Sarah's vocals melt between the harsh electronica to create a lighter, more approachable basis.
The ability to change the nature of a track is also handy in “Human Eyes Cry Godly Tears”, with a rapid melody being infused with other elements to great effect. With an almost drum and bass beat, infusions of steel pan effect and a succulent bass line work in perfect contrast to a heavy premise, once again allowing the vocals to do what they do best. Variation is also exhibited in the wonderful “Unlock My Heart”, with sustained keys and a fuzzing bass providing a pedestal for stunning echoed vocals and an uplifting melody.
Whilst these ideas work in the main, there is still some evidence of refinement needed. “Your Body Is A Machine” gradually develops a fast paced melody intended for stream – of - consciousness inspired vocals, yet unfortunately becomes a list of adjectives set against a faltering melody instead. Whilst not a catastrophic oversight, it is merely evidence of the difficulties in striking the balance between electro and softer, more creative elements.
This minor flaw by no means over shadows the EP as whole though, and Your Body Is A Machine is a formidable marker from a very talented young lady. With such clever ideas and a knack of using them effectively, there is sure to be a lot more to like in the near future.
