Whats New?

Gorillaz Video Screening : Gathered in a small studio in London’s Soho, you have to wonder what could possibly be so impressive about the new Gorillaz video that Britain’s journalists have been shepherded together for a screening. New single “On Melancholy Hill”...
Introducing : Glass Animals : www.4ortherecord.com hit fever pitch this weekend when not 1 but 2 new tracks from the incredible Glass Animals graced our inbox with their presence...
David's Lyre : Masked troubadour, David's Lyre is, like his semi-hidden aesthetic, somewhat of a mystery at present. Although if fairness exists in the world at all...
Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...
Lunar Youth : Interview : Lunar Youth make the kind of music that makes your heart skip a beat as the emphasis on romance engulfs you in a warm flurry of emotion. It’s really rather lovely. Their nostalgic take on pop, reminiscent of the 80’s penchant for...

The Barlights : If It Wasn't For The Light, The Dark Would Have Killed Us

The Barlights : If It Wasn't For The Light,

The Dark Would Have Killed Us

Released: 26th October 2009

Label: NR One Records

Everybody has heard how good the Norwich music scene is getting by now, the underground scene is ready to explode out to the rest of the country. Mainly the bands are shouty punk-pop concoctions, The Brownies, Bearsuit and UH OHs et al, The Barlights on the other hand are taking a more measured approach.

They're already on their second album, If It Wasn't For The Light, The Dark Would Have Killed Us and with vocals on a par with that of Olly Knights of Turin Brakes and rusty, jangly guitars they pound their way into your head.

It's mature, torn and dark, touching on the intense. 'Bend And Break' descends into a chorus made to be sung along to, dancy and punchy. 'Isobel' shows their more tender side, a song that wouldn't sound out of place on the last Ryan Adams album. 'Radiate' and 'Start Our Days' crank the ferocity levels, fast paced gravelly indie while 'Ticking' evokes Turin Brakes, only with their foot down, before embarking into the epic.

'Liars' closes If It Wasn't For The Light, The Dar Would Have Killed Us in almost clichéd fashion, a piano led radio-country ballad. They pull it off well, albeit predictably. It's a fine record though and it looks as though things are going in the right direction.

I have seen this band a few times around norwich and everytime they blow me away ! I cant believe they haven't gotten more radio play or been thrust into the limelight more ! every live gig has been brilliant and far more entertaining than some mainstream artists out there !

one of the few live bands out there that make you feel apart of 'something' at the gig !

hearing them when others arent aware of them is feeling like you have VIP tickets to a secret gig that the rest of the world doesn't know about !
