Whats New?

Gorillaz Video Screening : Gathered in a small studio in London’s Soho, you have to wonder what could possibly be so impressive about the new Gorillaz video that Britain’s journalists have been shepherded together for a screening. New single “On Melancholy Hill”...
Introducing : Glass Animals : www.4ortherecord.com hit fever pitch this weekend when not 1 but 2 new tracks from the incredible Glass Animals graced our inbox with their presence...
David's Lyre : Masked troubadour, David's Lyre is, like his semi-hidden aesthetic, somewhat of a mystery at present. Although if fairness exists in the world at all...
Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...
Lunar Youth : Interview : Lunar Youth make the kind of music that makes your heart skip a beat as the emphasis on romance engulfs you in a warm flurry of emotion. It’s really rather lovely. Their nostalgic take on pop, reminiscent of the 80’s penchant for...

Stars And Sons : 'If It’s Good For Me'

Stars  And Sons : 'If It’s Good For Me'

Released: 12th April 2010

Label: Twice Burnt Records

I feel like Stars And Sons are the sort of band that I really shouldn’t like, dealing, as they do, with jangly indie stuff and vocals reminiscent of forgettable ‘90s indie also-rans. That should spell a recipe for disaster, no? Why then, do I not hate this?

I guess because everything in it is ridiculously catchy. Pianos offset the verse before taking the lead in chorus breakdowns over choppy guitars. The vocals are borderline instantaneously sing-a-long and there’s a bridge that veers from laid back to theramin–shredding insanity. All in all there is far too much going on, though cleverly arranged and spaced, for this to be anything other than enjoyable.

Coming with it are three remixes including a decent but quite standard piece from Mike Mago, an interesting but slightly redundant feeling indie-pop make-over (isn’t that the magic bus stop we are at anyhow?) from Twin Kings and a shorter, sharper and vaguely electonic piece from The Blueskies that I can’t quite work out.

Expect, potential big festival hit that you may never want to hear again post Reading/Leeds. Live it up in the meantime!
