As peculiar as the track name may be, Stairs To Korea’s latest proves a pleasing effort. Thanks to simple instrumentation and a likeable demeanour, Will Vaughn will no doubt charm many a listener with his summertime ditty.
Seemingly taking influence from the Mystery Jets’ school of writing, Vaughn ensures a contagious hook is present from the start. Reminiscent of their summertime success story, the synthesized riff nestles nicely amongst a stripped down rhythm. Minimalist yet eminently likeable, there is a distinct appeal to such simple instrumentation.
With a voice of similar quality, Vaughn provides the perfect accompaniment to his creation. Clear and with an endearing honesty to it, his vocals are free of pretension and add considerably to the likeability factor. However, lamenting the tale of a man losing his identity, the lyrics are contrastingly substantial in premise and execution, creating a quirky paradox between vocals and music.
There is a lot to like about “Paul, Is This…”. Not only will it no doubt prove a seasonal delight, it also serves as a testament to simple, modest songwriting, two things Stairs To Korea can be applauded for.
