Slof-Man : Interview

Slof-Man : Interview

Listing his influences as Benga, Loefah and Skream amongst others, Slof-Man makes no apologies for jumping on the Dubstep bandwagon. Despite entering the scene very late, he has taken little in time in making himself one of the genre's biggest players, receiving praise from NME in the process.

Remix's of Florence and the Machine's 'Rabbit Heart' and Lady Gaga's 'Just Dance', along with a hugely successful EP, have made the Slof a recognisable name... and a YouTube phenomenon.

"I got into the scene bare late," admits the London-born producer.  "In fact, the first dubstep track I heard was Skream's remix of The Klaxons 'It's Not Over Yet' and that got me into it."

"Before that, I was producing grime, but never exactly knew what sound I was after."

A few listen's of his EP, 'Lessons of a Slof', will tell you that he has now found what he was searching for. Dubstep.

'Lessons of a Slof' contains his first popular remix, 'Just Dance' by Lady Gaga, but it was his remix of 'Rabbit Heart' that propelled him to the forefront of the fastest-growing genre in the UK.

"I'm surprised it was as popular as it was. The production on that was poor compared to my latest tracks!" Slof-Man tells us.

A collaboration with another producer Jor-One, 'Rabbit Heart' has almost reached 50,000 views on Slof-Man's YouTube account. Taking into account all the other accounts that have uploaded the song, it is hard to tell how many people are loving the tune.

"My highlight of 2009 has to be how popular the Florence remix was," he freely admits.

So has the master of the remix got any tips on what to look for in a potential remix?

"To be honest, I don't really know." he replies. So, that's a no then?  "I like vocals that are a bit different (that explains the use of Florence's over-sized lungs then), but the tune has already got to be popular. Otherwise, it won't get people's attention." Pearls of wisdom.

Another remix, Nelly Furtado's 'Turn off the Light', is the latest in a production line of popular SLof-Man mixes, and is the current track tearing up the internet. In fact, such is his status on the net, he recently made the 'Top 100 Most Viewed Musicians of the Week' on YouTube, not an easy feat when you're up against the whole world.

"I was shocked!" Slof admits."It's always a good feeling, knowing that people rate your stuff. It has given me the motivation to carry on what i'm doing."

So 2009 is long gone now, what can we expect from the Slof in 2010?

"I'm aiming to release another album by Spring and in the meantime, i'll continue banging out these remix's." Good news for everyone who enjoyed Florence, Nelly and Gaga getting a going over then!

Slof-Man was undoubtedly one of the best newcomers to the genre in 2009, so who better to ask for an opinion on the next big thing?

"Meeeeeeee," is his first reply. "But really, who knows? There are so many talented producers, and they all seem to be getting younger! But if I had to say one, I would say Beerz."

The interview is ended as I ask him for one fact people will not know about Slof-Man.

"During the rainy season, for camouflage, I allow blue and green algae to grow on my fur." is the, unexpected, response.

No matter how much camouflage he may try to grow, it will be impossible to avoid him in 2010. Slof-Man is set to be huge.
