Simian Mobile Disco : 'Cruel Intentions'

Released: Out Now!!!
Label: Wichita Recordings
So, the follow up to the much lauded/criticised “Audacity of Huge” (which, in all fairness is a very silly phrase) arrives. "Cruel Intentions" features the, um, controversial figure that is Beth Ditto on guest vocals and, frankly, she does a fabulous job here. A brilliantly sung, incredibly catchy lies over the top of a faintly mournful disco synth which builds and falls back in surrounded by shimmering melodies. A short but perfectly time drop in the middle lands us back in the middle with some more traditional SMD acid-y synths floating around under the vocal.
Definitely several steps above “Audactiy…”, “Cruel Intentions”, to me, smacks of being the “I Believe” of their new album. Something a little slower and different to what one might expect of them, but that is also likely to come away being one of your favourite tracks. See also, huge remixes from Maurice Fulton (amazing disco), Heartbreak (with a sort of acid-disco theme) and a brilliant and inventive dubstep mix from Joker.
