Whats New?

Gorillaz Video Screening : Gathered in a small studio in London’s Soho, you have to wonder what could possibly be so impressive about the new Gorillaz video that Britain’s journalists have been shepherded together for a screening. New single “On Melancholy Hill”...
Introducing : Glass Animals : www.4ortherecord.com hit fever pitch this weekend when not 1 but 2 new tracks from the incredible Glass Animals graced our inbox with their presence...
David's Lyre : Masked troubadour, David's Lyre is, like his semi-hidden aesthetic, somewhat of a mystery at present. Although if fairness exists in the world at all...
Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...
Lunar Youth : Interview : Lunar Youth make the kind of music that makes your heart skip a beat as the emphasis on romance engulfs you in a warm flurry of emotion. It’s really rather lovely. Their nostalgic take on pop, reminiscent of the 80’s penchant for...

Silver Columns : 'Yes and Dance' Remixes

Silver Columns : 'Yes and Dance' Remixes

Released: Out Now!!!

Label:

So, despite Monachy’s real/ex-/whatever identity being revealed early in January, we still seem to have plenty of these “mystery” bands around in the ether. Namely, Feathers and this lot, Silver Columns.

Here they remix their own track, “Yes and Dance” into something dark and, well, slightly odd. Opening with a solid 4/4 beat an odd vocal and a slightly effected synth, they swiftly bring in a rumbling bassline and reverb drenched vocals flood in over the top as they bring in a mixture of effected melodies. Then suddenly, melding out of nowhere and peeling away slightly from the body of the song is an 8-bit melody straight out of a SNES game. Strangely though (or perhaps not so strangely, as the whole thing is a little eerie and weird anyway) it works fairly well before the whole thing collapses into a small electronic freakout and dies in a pool of shimmering bleeps.

The Weirdo Police take on the track is a little more straightforward with it’s looped synth line and piano dropping in at various, appropriate moments over vocoded vocals. We are treated to the first un-effected vocals around halfway through the track before it reverts to vocoder use before building to a panned riff which darts around your ears with a vague reminisence of New Order. Not a bad little package, and with it you can expect to hear a lot more from this mysterious bunch in the coming year.
