Scott Matthews : 'Fractured'

Scott Matthews : 'Fractured'

Because it physically pains me to throw around nice archaic words like troubadour, as so many do when describing Ivor Novello winning singer-songwriter, Scott Matthews, I won’t.

The new single, ‘Fractured’ has been produced by Scott along with Gavin Monaghan, notable for his work with Mercury Rev, The Smiths and Elvis Costello and the high quality of the recording shines through.

The song begins with a few gentle arpeggios, which are underpinned by a suitably atmospheric Sigur rós/Air effect that becomes the leitmotif of the track.

Although the comparison has already been flogged to death, it is necessary to note that Matthews’ vocals occasionally resemble a re-incarnated Jeff Buckley, especially during the line:  ‘I am struggling, I can’t hold on, where’s your fight, can’t you help me?’  This is a somewhat sensational complement however and similarities could also be drawn with Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder.

Things are intensified with a Pablo Honey-esque step down to guitar distortion, the result is powerful, (albeit a little bit predictable), but effective nonetheless.

Matthews has voiced his own desire to make his music spontaneous, so as to capture a specific mood or feeling.  Although ‘Fractured’ is not as melodically intriguing as signature single ‘Elusive’, it still remains evocative.
