Nosound : 'A Sense Of Loss'

Released: K Scope
Label: 27th October 2009
As progressive, ambient rock goes, “A Sense Of Loss” works as a showcase of how to do it properly. Full of emotion, tension and atmosphere it crafts a world for its self over fifty two minutes and 6 tracks. Sure, it may not be everyone's cup of tea, but you have to be pretty fenced off not to appreciate the beauty of Nosound's work.
What the Italian band do so well is to link each track together. Throughout the album's duration, there is the constant feel that, despite their long running times, each track is related intimately to the last. The soft yet determined drum beat of “Some Warmth Into This Chill” carries it through to it's conclusion, dying out slowly to breathe life into an aptly named “Fading Silently”. Subtle instrumentation also provides the key to it's success, very rarely rising above a soft hum. Intricate piano and and acoustic guitars form the basis of their music, with “My Apology” in particular featuring a good example of lightly picked guitars and sustained notes throughout.
To complement such careful instrumentation, vocals from Giancarlo Erra offset the mood expertly. Possessing a tone that enchants and mesmerises with the slightest whisper, his voice rarely rises above the melody, creating an eerie atmosphere. Solid throughout, “Constant Contrast” in particular showcases his talents, an electronic whisper the highlight of a haunting performance beautifully set against more delicate guitar work and pulsing sustain.
Despite it's acquired taste, you could not find a better example of ambient, progressive music than “A Sense Of Loss”. Ticking every box required by the genre, Nosound have created a fluent, thoughtful album that makes an hour seem like a dream.
