NME Radar Tour: Stoke Sugarmill

NME Radar Tour

Where: Stoke Sugarmill

When: 4th October 2009

It's that time of year once again where the best in uncharted talent take to the road and sell their wares across the country. In the past, the Radar Tour has unearthed talents such as White Lies, Friendly Fires and the inexorable La Roux, and this year's line up appears to have just as much promise.

Proceedings kicked off with Boston four piece Yes Giantess, an enthusiastic, keyboard driven band full of determination. With their electro heavy sound and cheesy new romantic lyrics they are certainly not without their charm, a fact recognised by a welcoming crowd. Yet several tracks in it is hard to ignore the growing similarity between previous melody and lyrics, a shame considering their evident promise yet undoubtedly something that will be rectified in time.

Next, Local Natives filled the room with their rich, textured sound complemented by impressive Fleet Foxes – esque vocals. Despite a fairly lifeless performance, the band's well constructed and thoughtful melodies were more than enough to win over the crowd, drawing a rousing reception and widespread appreciation. Instrument swapping towards the end of the set showcased further their obvious talent, hinting at bigger and better things to no doubt come in the future.

However, the star of the night was undoubtedly the stunning Marina and the Diamonds, note perfect from start to finish of her set. Playing tracks including crowd favourites “Seventeen” and "I Am Not A Robot”, the songstress wowed gathered fans for an energetic, positive display. Following a fantastic rendition of Late Of The Pier's “Space And The Woods”, she concluded with the wonderful “Mowgli's Road”, with crowd participation abound. If there is one thing certain about the Radar Tour, it is that Marina and the Diamonds will surely find a bigger audience than they already have.

And so to close the night come Golden Silvers, delivering the kind of set now expected from the band. Undoubtedly the most recognised act of the tour, the four piece played a hit filled set with energetic professionalism to the delight of frantic fans. Hit's including “Golden Touch”, “Another Universe” and single “True Romance”, the band remained note perfect from start to finish. Closing with delightfully tuneful “Arrows Of Eros”, Golden Silvers confirmed beyond suspicion that they will soon become a household name.
