Mumford and Sons : 'The Cave and The Open Sea'

Released: Out Now
Label: Chess Club
Surely one of the most promising groups to come out of the London Anti-folk (a scene that has given birth to such artists as Laura Marling and Noah and the Whale) is Mumford and Sons. A four-piece (who can often be found providing vocal and instrumental back up to Laura Marling) who manage to make folk sound interesting and modern, whilst still using instruments that stick to the genres' roots.
‘The Cave’ opens simply with vocals from Marcus backed by gently plucked acoustic guitar strings, a sound that is nothing short of sublime. The song quickly escalates into a riotous bluegrass inspired folk party with an escalating drum beat that holds the whole thing together perfectly.
‘But my heart told my head’ is considerably slower and is full of banjos, horns and perfectly harmonised choral vocals.
Lyrically the band is as articulate as ever and Marcus’ passion resonates through both songs, his smooth yet occasionally raspy tones never missing a note.
‘The Cave and the Open Sea’ is the third release from the band and while only comprising of two tracks it sufficiently wets the appetite of the listener and promises big things for the bands album, expected later this year.
