Micachu & The Shapes

Currently re-writing the rules and generating more chat than anyone else in terms of emerging talent is 21 year old maestro Mica Levi, aka Micachu.  The East London composer/songwriter/producer/MC and sometime DJ pushes innovation and creativity further than most of her peers, winning fans and praise amongst most of the current music industry fraternity for her talent.

A pupil of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama studying composition and Matthew Herbert’s most recent protégé, she has been signed to Accidental Records and is renowned for her ingenious ability to blend anything from hip-hop to grime to pop and electro, into big tunes.  It’s no wonder she has been described as ‘the moniker of new talent’ and is expected to make some serious waves in the UK music scene in the very near future. 

Her live shows with her band The Shapes have established her firmly on the underground circuits providing her with a platform in which to not only showcase material but also the instruments she has fashioned for herself.  Yes that’s right, the pint-sized anti-songstress even invents her own instruments and bizarrely, is most notorious for her penchant for hoovers. With the genre mash up and the homemade sounds, plus the stripped down beats and keys as back-up, the frenzied mania of noise that accompany her vocal melodies culminates in experimental music at its best. 

Recent single releases include her debut ‘Lone Ranger’ and the more recent ‘Golden Phone’; an odd yet intoxifyingly brilliant mix up of lo-fi keys, insightful lyrics and urgent basslines, with a melody so intriguing you might as well leave it on repeat. Then there is the hugely successful 33 track ‘Filthy Friends’ mixtape, that she wrote and produced with people like Golden Silvers, Man Like Me and Kwes, which has equally made her in demand on respective club scenes.

Other ventures of the curious Miss Levi are the avant garde music collective that she started called ‘I Love S’n’M’, which gives other experimental and conceptual musicians an opportunity to get their music heard and she was also one of the 4 young composers chosen to compose a piece for the London Philharmonic Orchestra this year. To say that she is multi-faceted and uber-talented is kind of an understatement, but its clear that making music is what she was made to do. 

Matthew Herbert clearly knows a thing of two about unique and exciting musicians having worked with Roisin Murphy and discovering Dani Siciliano, so with his help on production duty and in nurturing such a prodigious talent Micachu is destined for huge things.
