Mew : 'Repeater Beater'

Mew : 'Repeater Beater'

Released: Out Now!!!

Label: Columbia Records

Despite their “pretentious art rock” billing, their words not mine, Mew's latest single is an accessible, experimental number that will undoubtedly attract new listeners whilst maintaining current ones.

Full of their usual offbeat rhythms and intricate guitaring, there is certainly something more mainstream about “Repeater Beater”. Despite fluctuating about the place, the delicate melody is catchy and persistent, forming a solid hook throughout the track. A subtle drum beat and pulsing bass give ample backing, turning it into a surprisingly conventional effort for the band.

However subtle touches make it considerably more than a mere ABC effort. Jonas Bjerre's hushed vocals add a quirky feel, his delicate voice whispering over the simmering melodies in trademark fashion. A closer listen also unearths muted keyboards, a twinkled undertone making a difference to the overall sound of the track.

To balance the old and the new is a tricky business, and one that many acts never manage to grasp. Yet Mew have seamlessly mastered the art, branching out towards a more accessible sound whilst losing nothing of what made them so unique. “Repeater Beater” will  be a popular track, no matter which elements people prefer.
