David's Lyre : Masked troubadour, David's Lyre is, like his semi-hidden aesthetic, somewhat of a mystery at present. Although if fairness exists in the world at all...
Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...
Lunar Youth : Interview : Lunar Youth make the kind of music that makes your heart skip a beat as the emphasis on romance engulfs you in a warm flurry of emotion. It’s really rather lovely. Their nostalgic take on pop, reminiscent of the 80’s penchant for...

Lightspeed Champion : 'Marlene'

Lightspeed Champion : 'Marlene'

Released: 18th January 2010

Label: Domino Records

Despite some stomping rhythms and not wholly without it's charm, Devonte Hynes' latest effort seems to fall short in the long run.

Fronted by an addictive riff and a solid vocal performance, a sturdy bass line  forms the focal point of the verse with marked success. Yet delve into the chorus and all purpose and poise is abandoned, replaced with sustained chords and strings that appear disjointed in context with such a likeable verse.

A lack of impetus leaves the track wanting further, eventually forming a stride only for a bland breakdown to signal it's departure. With only a brief guitar solo and chorus for a farewell, not only is it disappointing but also extremely puzzling, such a turn leaving the track feeling bland and empty still.

With the exception of a few positives “Marlene” is unfortunately sub par. It may prove be a grower, but for now it seems considerably undercooked.
