David's Lyre : Masked troubadour, David's Lyre is, like his semi-hidden aesthetic, somewhat of a mystery at present. Although if fairness exists in the world at all...
Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...

Japandroids : 'Art Czars'

Japandroids : 'Art Czars'

Released: 2nd March 2010

Label: Polyvinyl

Snarling, seething and full of attitude, “Art Czars” is a gloriously aggressive return for Canadian duo Japandroids.

Losing none of their trademark gritty sound, it proves more mature in execution. Solid in structure, a catchy chorus forms the basis of it's appeal whilst well balanced verses maintain it's one hundred miles and hour momentum. Whilst the instrumentation is simple overall, it is most certainly effective.

Lyrically there is no let up in the aggression. Such lines as “they suck in angels and spit out demons” are growled mercilessly by King and Prowse, complimenting the equally combative music to a tee. Again, whilst not being the most varied of vocal performances, their efforts tick every single box.

So while not being wildly imaginative, “Art Czars” is a rough and ready anthem that will not fail to please. Vintage Japandroids, it delivers on every level.
