Frankie & The Heartstrings : 'Hunger/Fragile'
.jpg)
Released: Out Now!!!
Label: Rough Trade
An odd little single this. I have to confess to know very little about this lot, aside from the fact that they are from Sunderland and are on Rough Trade. Having heard something not so positive shortly before diving in for a listen I wasn’t entirely sure what I was in for.
'Hunger', it turns out, starts of reasonably well as a standard piece of bouncy indie with lots of background ”oh-ohs” and a traditional northern tinted lead vocal. Short, sharp, to the point. Not bad at all, but pretty much indie-dancefloor fodder.
'Fragile' fairs somewhat better than 'Hunger' by taking a more melancholic edge. A lethargic vocal meanders gently across a landscape that has been thought through far more than the preceding, lead track, with it’s languishing bassline and methodical drum pattern and guitar melodies. The chorus does revert into something a bit more distorted and jangly, but as a whole this is easily the superior of the two tracks.
