Whats New?

Gorillaz Video Screening : Gathered in a small studio in London’s Soho, you have to wonder what could possibly be so impressive about the new Gorillaz video that Britain’s journalists have been shepherded together for a screening. New single “On Melancholy Hill”...

David's Lyre : Masked troubadour, David's Lyre is, like his semi-hidden aesthetic, somewhat of a mystery at present. Although if fairness exists in the world at all...
Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...

Flogging Molly: ‘Float’

Flogging Molly: ‘Float’

Having started in L.A in 1997, these men (they’re ‘old’ guys now) have honed in on their musical style and it’s both unique and compelling, and is showcased beautifully on ‘Float’ – a song that actually, really crushed my heart a little.

Flogging Molly’s Celtic sound is jaw-droppingly amazing - full of murky mandolin, archaic accordion and gritty guitar that Dave King’s heartfelt vocals glide over gorgeously.

‘Float’ is a song of ruminations and bereavement about not giving up and just carrying on and at one point King’s strained shouts cry “it’s the best I can” and we really know he means it. Full of dreaming, thinking, singing and, drinking, this track tells us that if it’s all we know, then “that’s all you can” – it’s a life line almost that reaches out to touch the very inners of your soul.

The track is accompanied by an astounding animated video from Flynn Productions directorial duo Kari and Saul, featuring a lank, shackled character that doesn’t want to “sink the boat that (he) built to keep afloat”. It’s evocative and cinematic, and I insist that you listen to it.
