Filthy Dukes : 'Nonsense In The Dark'

Released: 7th December 2009
Label: Fiction
Stepping slightly away from fierce electronica, London synthpop Filthy Dukes have struck upon gold. With their new single “Nonsense In The Dark” they have produced probably one of the most exciting and memorable tracks of the year. As much of an exaggeration as it may sound, it's wonderful development and considerate instrumentation makes it's delicate melody live long in the memory.
Whilst not ignoring the electronic influences altogether, it's sparing usage and subtle inflections allow a solid instrumental basis to star throughout the track. Rarely rising above a whisper, the vocals bare a moody quality further accentuated by a determined yet delicate bass. Consistent and unrelenting, it provides a sturdy backbone for the duration of the track's six minutes.
Around this muted guitars add depth with a simple but charming melody, a twinkled keyboard riff completing the ensemble. Despite it's sizeable running time there is no filler, with each addition and change adding yet more intrigue to a truly multi-textural experience.
And without shouting or causing a fuss, “Nonsense In The Dark” becomes a spectacular success. Through astute composition and a deft touch the track hits the right notes of minimalism, making six minutes seem considerably less. It seems that Filthy Dukes certainly are more than just one trick ponies.
