Fanfarlo : 'Walls Are Coming Down'

Fanfarlo : 'Walls Are Coming Down'

Released: 21st September 2009

Label: Canvasback

Oozing with creativity and charm, “The Walls Are Coming Down” from the fascinating Fanfarlo is a delightfully experimental track that will undoubtedly draw praise from many genres and disciplines.

The band manage to encapsulate a wide array of influences to form a solid yet technically intricate basis. Brass instruments add a crisp flavour of mariachi, complemented well by a subtle glockenspiel whilst a robust bass line anchors each influence together superbly. Add to that a cascading string section and you have a track seemingly bursting with a muddle of instruments, yet in reality combining to provide a rich, textured melody.

Vocalist Simon Balthazar puts in an understated performance, not encroaching on the well constructed melody yet doing enough to complement it well. With a soft and supple voice, it floats in between each musical element perfectly, fluctuating in tone and volume to give the track and almost pulse – like feel. Group vocals are also well placed around the chorus, adding texture and additional warmth to an already impressive track.

There truly is something for everyone in “The Walls Are Coming Down”. Whilst remaining understated and subtle, it's expertly crafted melody and enchanting vocal performance cross borders and genuinely impress from start to finish.
