Wednesday morning and now most of the 4TR team are fully recovered from their epic travels, ranging from London to Bristol to Nottingham for the Dot to Dot Festival. It only took 3 days.
So 4ortherecord has arrived, finally, and its been emotional! A desire to create something as far reaching as possible, but at the same time creating a niche and setting us aside from all the other music sites is steadily becoming realised.
You may have noticed if you follow 4or The Record regularly that through our new music interviews there has been a prevalent pop-esque theme running from artist to artist. This was by no means intentional, however it’s possibly a positive indication on what we can expect to be blasting out of your i-pod throughout 2009.
The caliber is high and a rich tapestry of ideas are commandeering the attention. From the stellar Little Boots, to label mate Marina and The Diamonds, and the cocknbullkid coming up behind them; to bands like The Hot Melts, Fanfarlo and Friendly Fires, who whilst not adhering to the traditional qualities possibly associated with pop music, are taking things further with their own interpretation.
Some could argue about the success of pop music in 2008, especially if you associate it with bands like Scouting For Girls or The Hoosiers. With that/them in mind it wasn’t a highly successful nor an interesting year for pop offerings, and don’t even get me started on those purity ring wearing Jonas Brothers.
But, with our eyes firmly looking to the future (despite the potential of the comedic hosiers et al releasing their likely 2nd albums this year) it’s looking bright. And not necessarily bustling with those effervescent Brit School alumni.
New York continues to be a hot breeding ground for buzz bands, and the crazy hype surrounding bands like Amazing Baby and Passion Pit is somewhat coming to fruition, with both in turn delivering anticipated debut records. Records that have been so widely revered and talked about across the UK and the blogosphere since the year of 2009 dawned. Even Radio 1 seems to be catching on and amping up for another year of new music. Excited? Yes.
So while we continue to seek out new music that gets our blood racing and write about it here, you need to continue the stellar work by listening to their music before the rest of the world catches on and some blood thirsty major gets their hands on them and changes it in the name of ‘commerciality’. Better still go out and actually BUY their music, or at the very least download spotify and create your own niche little playlist. Keep it pop for now. In fact keep it anything you like, as long as it’s not Glasvegas.
Spotify. Well that is another rambling in itself.
