David's Lyre : Masked troubadour, David's Lyre is, like his semi-hidden aesthetic, somewhat of a mystery at present. Although if fairness exists in the world at all...
Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...
Lunar Youth : Interview : Lunar Youth make the kind of music that makes your heart skip a beat as the emphasis on romance engulfs you in a warm flurry of emotion. It’s really rather lovely. Their nostalgic take on pop, reminiscent of the 80’s penchant for...

Dizzee Rascal : Liverpool Guild of Students

Dizzee Rascal

Where: Liverpool Guild of Students

When: 24th October 2009

After blasting onto the British music scene back in 2003, Dizzee Rascal deservedly became the youngest person to win the holy grail of music, a prestigious Mercury Music Award, winning with only one album under his belt ‘The boy in da corner’. Since then his witty lyrics and buzzing stage swagger has kept his music assault on the charts going from strength to strength.

After launching his second and third albums, ‘Showtime’ and ‘Maths + English’, Dizzee finally hit it big with the 2008 dance smash, ‘Dance Wiv Me’ – a collaboration with well known hit maker Calvin Harris.

2009 saw Dizzee bring out his best work so far with his ‘Tongue N’ cheek’ album which he brought along with all the big hits to the diverse crowd at Liverpool Guild of Students.

Bouncing out on stage to cheers from an already sweaty crowd, he began with some of his older stuff that was not well recognised or particularly well received by the crowd; except for the hard-core, dedicated ravers in the mist who didn’t care what was playing as long as it had thumping beats and blasts of impressive strobe lighting displays.

Finally came a song with a catchy chorus that everyone knew – ‘Just a rascal’ - and automatically it sent the crowd into a massive high of boisterous singing and jumping. Dizzee’s infectious stage presence of hyperactivity brought the whole crowd together and allowed everyone to let go of the dance inhibitions (and their drinks) to partake in simultaneous jumping and the flailing of limbs.

After dedicating the first half of the gig to tracks of his new album, Dizzee stuck to the more epic, rave-stopping tunes for the rest of the show leaving the room on a most definite buzz.

This electric energy caused by one man, wearing unashamedly a t-shirt with his own face on, on stage remained throughout the rest of the performances of crowd pleasers ‘Holiday’ and catchy new tune ‘Dirtee cash’.

Dizzee’s ease at enchanting the crowd himself, intercepting with his impressive DJ and support acts, turned a Saturday night at the Uni into a massive night out mixed with a gig.

The night ended on a definite bouncy high, from the explosive fireworks on stage to 2000 people simultaneously letting go on their dancing worries and going ‘Bonkers!’. Dizzee’s catchy number 1 was most definitely the biggest hit of the night and left the crowd wanting more.

After recent triumphs at festivals across the country, his gig at The BBC Electric Proms and the unforgettable collaboration with Shirley Bassey at the Children In Need concert at the Royal Albert Hall, Dizzee has now been given the push to leave his grimy roots behind in favour of a career in more mainstream pop. He had us all shouting ‘Dizzee for Prime Minister’ at the gig and if he did run, he would definitely get my vote.

Hats off to you Mr Rascal for providing a truly memorable electric grime night.
