Dirty Projectors : 'Temecula Sunrise/Cannibal Resource'

Dirty Projectors : 'Temecula Sunrise/Cannibal Resource'

Released: 28th September 2009

Label: Domino Records

Brimming with strings and soul, Dirty Projectors have once again created a record to captivate the imagination in so many ways. Temecula Sunrise/Cannibal Resource features something for everyone in true semi-chaotic fashion, spilling styles and genres together to wonderful effect.

One thing that the Projectors certainly avoid is being tied down to a specific genre. From the off, they create rambunctious, unpredictable bits and ideas that seemingly have no place next to each other, yet become perfectly harmonious in practice. Title track “Temecula Sunrise” blends a distinct  blues improvisation feel with distortion guitars, creating a priceless jam session feel. Despite this, the music is always under control and suitably bluesy vocals maintain a refined freshness.

It is these superbly balanced vocals that allow the band to be so expressive and experimental in their instrumentation. “Cannibal Resource” once again features unpredictable guitaring and collated influences, yet with stunning group vocals and a stand out performance from Longstreth provide a sturdy focal point for the track. With a tone of impressive purity and a sizeable range, it is easy to become transfixed in Longstreth's vocals, an event that never fails to disappoint.

The undoubted stand out on the EP, however, is the marvellously soulful “Ascending Melody”. Following the “jam session” feel once more, a delightfully bright guitar melody is accompanied by subtle percussion, allowing the vocalists to take centre stage. And from all out chromatic assaults to whispered words they do so, filling nearly six minutes with glorious blues infused vocal beauty. The female voices of Haley Dekle and Angel Deradoorian form a fantastic partnership, laying a soft and cushioned basis for Longstreth's soulful crooning once again. It really is hard to believe that such a simple premise can provide such stunning results, yet will a laid back attitude and skilful instrumentation the Projectors do so with ease and aplomb.

Although it is almost becoming expected of Dirty Projectors to produce quality music at a constant, it is always a breath of fresh air to hear it. With such a unique approach to song writing and a plethora of influences crammed into each track, there is always something for everyone guaranteed.
