Dinosaur Pile-Up : 'The Most Powerful E.P In The Universe'
.jpg)
Released: Out Now!!!
Label: Big Brain Records
Dino Pile-Up hail from Leeds and join a pack of upcoming artists such as Quack Quack, The Lapels and Pulled Apart By Horses that deserve to get some good media coverage and have a shot at success. Dinosaur Pile-Up are probably more likely to hit the gold mine though, due to their appearances at Hoxton’s Bar and Grill – conquering the wankish massiv’.
There’s a whole lot of Weezer in Dino Pile-Up’s first EP, ‘The Most Powerful E.P In The Universe’ (no NME, it’s not pure grunge), as Matt Bigland (of Mother Vulpine) invents witty, anthemic, acidic pop lyrics for the young fan of Dino Jr, Sebadoh, Nirvana or even, The Vines. “Summer Hit Single” retains Weezer predictable lyrics, fast-paced skateboarding rhythms and “I’ll be waiting, I’ll be hating…” chant-along chorus. They probably hung around Leeds’ Corn Exchange when it was a breeding ground for ‘goths’ and ‘moshers’, listening to Mascis and Cobain when others were bopping to the Foo Fighters latest releases. This is the worrying thing - Dinosaur Pile-Up could swerve the way of power-grunge and if they get a few plays at Leeds Festival they’ll drown in a pool of Thursday fans.
“Cat Attack!!” displays obvious 90s grunge affection, as a powerful rock song with comedy twist. Sadly, this eers on the Jack Black side of things and again will only entrance the adolescent mop-head. Next track “Melanin” is great, with lazy, stoner nonchalance, twinning with Mascis’s ‘Farm’ release excellently. This journo’s thinking they’ve strategically placed "Cat Attack" to make "Melanin" stand out, and expose their true musical influence with smooth effect.
Hopefully Dinosaur Pile-Up will reach great heights for 2009 grunge-pop.
