Daniel Merriweather : 'Impossible'

Released: 17th August 2009
Label: Allido/Columbia Records
Previous Daniel Merriweather singles ‘Changes’ and ‘Red’ were produced by Mark Ronson, however you could almost ignore the fact they were. However, Ronson has unleashed his full wrath on Merriweather’s latest single ‘Impossible’. The track although undeniably catchy is like a Mark Ronson paint by numbers: lots of horns, a retro beat and a big sing-a-long chorus, this is ultimately the problem though. It is so obviously a track produced by him that it really wouldn’t matter who sang it, it could be any standard session artist and thanks to the production values would still sound the same, artificial and bland.
The main problem is less with Merriweather (it’s not his fault Ronson can only produce one style of song) and wholly with the apparent saviour of production. ‘Impossible’ is meant to sound edgy and raw, unfortunately for Ronson everyone has sussed out his ‘style’ now so the whole song just sounds hideously contrived.
Putting the production values aside, Merriweather’s lyrics are pretty sub-standard too, once again he is found to be singing about how he would do absolutely anything for love (I wish he didn’t do this), and again it sounds very samey.
The upsetting thing is that if you took Daniel away from the stranglehold of Mark Ronson and let him blossom naturally he could obviously do wonders, his voice is a beautiful instrument both powerful and subtle at the same time, the instrument has just been put with the wrong orchestra.
