Who - Cheeky Cheeky and the Nosebleeds
Where - By their van with them sat on the roof before their Bristol Dot to Dot performance at Fiddlers.
When – 25th May 2008
Boisterous indie popsters Cheeky Cheeky and the Nosebleeds all hail from East Anglia bringing with them a raucous stage presence, catchy indie hooks and a lot of personality. They have recorded for Lamacq at Maida Vale, toured with Vincent Vincent and Joe Lean and his gang, amongst others and have just been confirmed to play Glastonbury. Nice work for a five-some who have only been together since they grew out of their tree-house, which we get the impression really wasn’t long ago!
With them sat on top of their van and one of their managers asleep inside we had a bit of banter with them before their Fiddlers gig at Dot to Dot.
They thought we resembled an all girl indie army as we walked up the road. We thought they were a nice bunch of lads who bring frantic energy on stage with their sweat infused pop music and the moves they bust. It’s refreshing to see a band sincerely having the time of their lives whilst performing to a crowd!……..These boys are going to make their imprint on the industry this year and will be coming to a venue near you soon. Go see!
Christian - Guitar
Charlie - Vocals/Guitar
Rory - Vocals
Ali - Drums
Thom - Bass
4TR - You probably get asked this all the time but where did the name come from?
Rory - There is a funny story behind this actually. Charlie over to you….
Charlie – Well do you know the film “The Horse Whisperer”? It’s a good film isn’t it! So we used to watch that quite a lot when we were about 10 or 11.
Rory - At least 3 or 4 times a day
Charlie - at least. And we would all kind of go up to the tree house and watch it together. If you turn up “The Horse Whisperer” really loud that’s what he whispers to the horses “cheeky, cheeky and the nosebleeds”
Rory - we were obsessed with that film, so it made sense to use it.
4TR – [laughing] That’s a good story…
Rory - And true[laughing]
4TR - So how do you all know each other?
Rory - Various school things, I used to live like half a mile away from Thom since I was about seven.
Thom - You still do!
Rory - Yeah well yeah I do, and…
Thom – [interrupting] You still are seven as well.
Rory - Yeah I am actually still 7 and we used to play music together and listen to bands and stuff.
4TR - Have you guys seen any of the other bands playing in the Dot to Dot line-up yet?
Charlie – well we came up from London today because we played at the Nottingham dot to dot festival yesterday but haven’t had a chance to see anyone yet.
4TR - Anyone you want to see
Thom – Are the Mystery Jets on today?
4TR - No you missed them, they played yesterday.
Thom - Oh fuck!
Rory - I really like Hercules and Love Affair so it would be cool to see them. But I don’t know if we are sticking around yet, we might have to get back to London.
4TR - Have you played in Bristol before?
Charlie - We played with Vincent Vincent and the Villains at the Louisiana recently and it was busy, good gig!
Ali – its weird there though a bit like playing in someone’s living room or something.
Charlie – yeah and there is loads of padding everywhere so the sound was a bit funny, there is no echo in that place.
4TR - Where does Cheeky Cheeky & the Nosebleeds get the best reception?
Rory - Northampton is always great.
Thom – Yeah it’s like our second home.
Rory - For some reason we have an insane amount of fans there.
4TR - Where is the furthest afield you have played so far?
Charlie - We played in Amsterdam recently, which was amazing. We played there with the Young Knives.
Rory - Yeah that was sweet
4TR - Who are you listening to in your van?
Christian - ODB [puts in a tape in car stereo and plays it to us]
Rory – haha we don’t really listen to that, even though it’s there.
Charlie - We do a bit…
Rory – We have an I-pod for when we are travelling, at the moment we listen to a lot of Blur.
4TR - What bands are around at the moment that you guys like?
Rory - We like Black Lips, Social Group are really good but they broke up so no-one has heard of them, nor will they ever really.
Thom – [laughing] There is a band called Rupert they are good as well
Charlie – yeah Rupert and the Comedians, they are our buddies from East Anglia
Rory - Vincent Vincent are damn good as well and Times New Viking
4TR - Anyone you hate?
Rory - Yeah we have a bit of a feud with the Black Eyed Peas, but they don’t know about it to be fair.
Charlie – yeah we are pretty ticked off with WILL.I.AM after what he said about us!
4TR – [incredulously] What’s he been saying about you boys?
Charlie – [laughing] Unspeakable things.
Rory - Its really bad we can’t repeat them, it’s just awful.
Charlie - And he has been taking the piss out of the way we dance!
4TR – So can we expect some moves from you onstage today?
Charlie – Of course, and you guys have to dance as well.
4TR - You have a single out at the moment right?
Rory – yeah we put a single out on the 17th March and we are going to do another single in September.
4TR - How has it been doing?
Rory - Its still doing alright actually, it’s all good.
4TR – What label did you put it out on?
Thom – “Tired and lonesome”, which is our other managers’ label. We are just going to wait and see what happens with the next single and then are hopefully looking to start doing our own headline tour in September, so yeah exciting times.
4TR - Are you thinking about an album yet?
Charlie - Well it’s definitely an idea.
Rory - We probably wouldn’t do one until next year, maybe the start of 2009.
4TR - You know your single “Slow Kids”, I read in an article that people think it’s about disabled children, but its about you guys isn’t it?
Charlie – Yeah it’s about us. In the Sun newspaper it said it was about love amongst the disabled but its not so don’t worry, it’s about us and the people who come see us, it’s not derogatory!
