Chase & Status

Tonight is the night for fiendishly dirty raving and whomping bass; the night you leave with someone else’s sambucca in your hair and lager all over your feet; the night you transform into a sweaty, dribbling, out-of-breath mess; the night before the day you know you’re gonna have ringing in your ears. Yet you and everyone around you are still grinning from ear to ear because we’re here to witness the front runners in UK Drum & Bass: Chase & Status.
From the moment the doors open at 7pm and first act Marvel steps up to the stage, people are getting involved. From the too-cool indie kids to the girls with more make up on their faces than clothes on their bodies to the serious DnB heads - everyone is loving it. None of this ‘I really wanna dance but don’t want to look like a dick and be the first one on the dancefloor’ malarky - the party is right at the front. Marvel kicks off the night with some summery nostalgia in the form old school garage with a dirty bass hit, then follows through with some darker jungle-tipped drum & bass, effortlessly working with MC Reuben to keep the crowd on that perfect high.
The highlight of the night has to be penultimate act Nero who wows the crowd with a mix of drum & bass, dubstep and wobble - and a lot of Sub Focus. Showcasing tracks from their new, self-titled album, like ‘Let The Story Begin’ and ‘World Of Hurt’ and their ‘Take Me To The Hospital’ remix, Nero know what’s big in the scene right now and play just the right mix of old, new, theirs, not theirs and just plain choons.
Now we’re all here to see Chase & Status tonight - it’s no surprise the crowd is surging by the time they rock up to their set twenty minutes late. With three Number Ones in the UK Dance Chart, a Number Two album ‘More Than A Lot’ and their new single ‘End Credits’ featuring on Michael Caine’s new film Harry Brown, these guys, for a drum & bass act are right up there.
Playing tune after tune with live drummer and MC in tow, including D&B anthems ‘Hurt You’ and ‘Smash TV’, the quiet pair stand behind their almighty initials looking onto a mass of bouncing heads and raving arms grasping glowsticks, phones and lighters before pulling out their gem Plan B for a finale of ‘End Credits’ and ‘Pieces’. Chase even rocks out on guitar.
Despite a flawless performance and a riled-up crowd, the duo didn’t really interact with the crowd and their set was more a promo for their album than a drum & bass showcase. Maybe that’s a sign they’ve made it, maybe it’s just how they roll but it would have been nice to hear some of their tasty remixes and see them appreciating their crowd just a touch more. But they did what they came to do; get people moving and get people on a level - ready for the house parties, clubs and raves to follow. Nice.
