Camera Obscura : My Maudlin Career

The other day I was feeling quite sorry for myself as I have a horrible cold, I’m convinced it’s going to turn into the flu. Woe is me! Anyway, I decided that I would go out and buy some music to make me feel better. I walk into the record shop, make my way through the CDs and lo and behold, the new Camera Obscura album, My Maudlin Career, is staring at me! I didn’t even know it was out this week, I thought it was next week! I’m starting to feel better already!
After two listens straight through, I can safely say that this album is the most beautiful album I have heard in a long time. Even the picture of a swan on the cover doesn’t scare me (yes, I am scared of swans.).
Tracyanne’s voice is just stunning; I fail to see why she hasn’t been regarded as one of the best vocalists around, a truly remarkable voice that leaves you covered in goose bumps.
There are a lot of heartbreaking lyrics on this album, but that doesn’t mean it’s morbid. Far from it. If I could describe the album in one word, I’d probably say it was “summery” and moreover the whole vibe of this album, like a lot of Camera Obscura’s songs is quite 60s ish.
The album starts with the lead single, French Navy. I’ve probably said this before about a few albums but, if this is the only song you’ve heard then buy the album. You will not be disappointed at all.
The second track, The Sweetest Thing opens with the saddest line I’ve heard in a while, “I’m going on a date tonight, to try and fall out of love with you. I know, I know this is a crime. But I don’t know what else to do.” If you’ve just had your heartbroken, then this album may provide some kind of comfort to you.
Overall, if you want an album that you’re going to play religiously throughout the summer, then this is the one for you. It’s just perfect from start to finish and doesn’t get tired even after listening to it over and over.
Fans of Camera Obscura will love their new offering, and for those who may not have heard of them, well, you’ll probably love it too.
