Broken Bells : 'Broken Bells'

Broken Bells : 'Broken Bells'

Released: 8th March 2010

Label: Columbia

Being genuinely unique is becoming increasingly hard, yet it is something that Broken Bells accomplish deceptively well. With their synonymous debut album they not only stand out from the crowd, but stamp a distinct individuality on impressively competent tracks.

Yet this is hardly surprising given the talent at hand. Comprised of all round genius producer Danger Mouse and Shins front man James Mercer, there is almost an embarrassment of riches in terms of vision and experience. Tracks like “October” and “Sailing To Nowhere” demonstrate familiar poise and precision, sparkling with sharp ideas and deft execution.

As you would expect, diversity is not a problem either for such a contrasting duo.  “Your Head Is On Fire” takes a more subdued yet equally adept approach, gentle strings twinkling amidst a light electro backdrop, whilst “Vaporize” sees Mercer in his acoustic element, some balanced tinkering from his opposite number remaining crucial yet non invasive.

Not enough can be said for Broken Bells, and that goes for the band as well. With a debut so full of confidence, skill and vision, this side project is evidently something much more substantial for two talented individuals.
