Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...
Lunar Youth : Interview : Lunar Youth make the kind of music that makes your heart skip a beat as the emphasis on romance engulfs you in a warm flurry of emotion. It’s really rather lovely. Their nostalgic take on pop, reminiscent of the 80’s penchant for...

Beatbullyz : 'Skills'

Beatbullyz : 'Skills'

Released: Out Now!!!

Label: Unsigned

Being described by The Guardian as ‘The UK’s answer to the Black Eyed Peas,’ could prove daunting for some bands.  But Beatbullyz seem to have taken it into their stride.

The four-piece from Swindon, where they regularly sell-out 700 capacity shows, release ‘Skills', a tune with an electro edge that has bundles of energy, and a lot of catchy hooks.

Bully is the group’s producer, singer and keyboard player and he opens the tune with a strong vocal, even if he does sound a little like Example. The vocal builds up the drop brilliantly and you can hear the tempo slowly rise until the beat is ready to be unleashed. And when it is dropped, it does not disappoint. A brilliant, edgy electro drop is twinned with some electric keyboard notes to have you tapping your feet away delightfully to the beat.

Then it’s time for group MC/lyricist Bozo. His bars are swift and flow very nicely, raising tempo of the track and helping to maintain it. His verse is a welcome change in the middle of the track and really helps to mix it up before the heavy electro bassline is dropped on us again.

Having mentioned half the band, it would be rude not to mention the other half. Philonious Funk does a great job as DJ on the track. Cutting and mixing everything, it all seems to fit together so perfectly. Last, but not least, is drummer Disco who keeps a bass element going with his rhythmic drumming.

The finished article is a big electro tune that blends all the key components together brilliantly.

“Skills’ is definitely one for the download list, no wonder Radio 1’s Huw Stephens is such a big fan of the quartet.
