Arctic Monkeys : 'My Propeller'

Released: 22nd March 2010
Label: Domino Records
On the third month of this year, The Arctic Monkeys gear up for the release of their third single from their third album and frankly its third rate.
Following the Monkeys´ groundbreaking and award winning success of their first album Whatever You Say I Am, That´s What I´m Not and the very successful Favourite Worst Nightmare, it was no surprise to them or anyone to see their latest release, Humbug, rocketed to number one. Perhaps if people knew this was going to be on it they would have thought twice.
Gone are the fast single note riffs, the catchy hooks, the frankly brilliant lyrics of Alex Turner that made this band truly memorable and helped them explode onto the music scene. What it´s been replaced with is a very un-catchy song, that’s as dull as It is forgettable. One wonders what happened to that early style, brimming with youthful exuberance. Maybe they got older, maybe they got wiser. Either way, I wish they hadn´t if this is the result.
The song revolves around a very uninspiring hook, albeit accompanied by some brilliant drumming. Turner croons slowly and almost sexually, someone should tell him that unfortunately it comes off sounding silly and unnatural. After the ´chorus´ if you can call it that, the song stops dead and leaves you hoping that you are listening to the shortest single ever released. Disappointment befalls you as the song irritatingly chugs along in much the same manner. It´s a very disjointed, unimaginative track, that cant be saved even with a mildly more upbeat ending, including a distant wailing solo.
This opinion may be slated by die hard Monkeys fans who believe I´m perhaps not reading into the song enough, not delving deep into the meaning of the lyrics and this haunting sound. To them I say…no-one´s going to want to, there is little here to inspire further interest in the song. This song will probably do well, as have other recent releases mainly due to an unwavering and huge fanbase. While I used to be part of this group, I´ve been slowly worn down by this album and its associated releases. ´My Propeller´ is a straw that not only broke the camels back, but made him loose his spirit.
A generous
