Alessi's Ark : Interview
.jpg)
Alessi's Ark, otherwise known as nineteen year-old Londoner Alessi Laurent-Marke, had a pretty big year in 2009, and this month, she’s embarking on a very intimate tour with talented songwriter Rachael Dadd.
In 2009, Alessi played on the opening night at Glastonbury in a packed-to-the-rafters tent, released an album produced by her “dream” producer, played at Neil Young's Hyde Park show and supported some of the best upcoming musicians in the country.
Mike Mogis, he of Conor Oberst's American pioneers Bright Eyes, was the man on the dials on her brilliantly sweet debut album, Notes From The Treehouse. It drew on the poetry she writes, and is beautifully captivating from start to finish.
“Mike and I met while he was on tour in 2007 and he found time that September to start work on the album. Mike has an amazing ear for ideas, sounds and structures. It was comfortable to play and work with him.”
She also met the legendary Oberst after moving over to Mogis' Omaha home for the recording of the album. She was just 18 when she made the trip, so she didn't do it alone.
“Omaha is a very special place. I went out with my Mum and Mike introduced us to some wonderful people. He has a beautiful family. I did meet Conor in the garden of the studio a few times, he's a nice fellow.”
Since releasing her debut on Virgin Records in May, she has taken her Ark to Glastonbury's Queens Head tent, playing to thousands on the Thursday evening, and on Irish and German tours. Her popularity in France prompted a major French perfume advert to take on one of her songs to soundtrack their national TV advert.
“[Glastonbury] felt like a scene from a film! I'm glad it was shared with family and friends.”
Her latest tour, joint with Rachael Dadd (of esteemed band Whalebone Polly), includes nationwide tour support from Adelaide’s Cape, the lo-fi folk project of talented local Sam Taylor.
This year has already seen him support Stars Of Sunday League to great acclaim, and straight after his tour with Alessi and Rachael, he supports the much-hyped First Aid Kit for two dates on their tour.
“I haven't heard very much of Adelaide's Cape, it'll be nice to have a listen on tour,” says Alessi.
Alessi heads out on a UK tour with Laura Marling in April, playing a collection venues with the capacity to hold thousands. The tour is expected to sell out. “And Laura is a lovely person, I'm looking forward to the shows.”
And Alessi’s not sitting still and resting on her laurels either. The hard work continues, she's got her work cut out though to take her Ark through a better year than the last.
“I'm planning to start work on the next album in March, the shows take me through to that.”
See Alessi’s Ark play with support from Rachael Dadd and Adelaide’s Cape this month, with tickets on sale through WeGotTickets.com.
