The Noughties are over and we have to say goodbye to the first decade of the Millennium. It is a shame because there was many zeitgeist breaking moments in the decade in the music world. The irony then, that 2009 was a pretty nondescript year, is not lost...
I don’t know about you, but I’m sick and tired of seeing television programmes lamenting what a piss poor decade the so-called ‘noughties’ have been. I mean, a decade is just a period of time definable by the fact that it spans exactly ten years...
Alberta Cross: Showcase Live Photos

September of this year marked the point in their career when Alberta Cross would unveil the long awaited debut LP, Broken Side of Time, complete with its merger of British and American influences. Taking the best bits of blues rhythms and amalgamating them with thrashing guitars and laying claim to the term ‘souly rock and roll’, Alberta Cross have certainly evolved from the modest, folk-minded sounds of their 2007 EP, The Thief & The Heartbreaker.
Alberta Cross began as the side project of Swedish born vocalist Petter Ericson Stakee and Londoner bassist Terry Wolfers in Shoreditch, before relocating to New York after beginning a love affair with the city during an industry event. The move and it’s ensuing inspiration propelled the duo to become a five piece band and began the inevitable progression in sound that is so poetically conveyed throughout Broken Side of Time.
Recorded in Austin, Texas and mixed in NYC by John O’Mahony, the record took root in April 2008 during a jam session which fueled by “a little drink and a little smoke” gave way to a new and immediate style and breathtaking results. Stakee himself has commented : "I remember thinking that night, this is going to be insane”.
It’s loud, its brash at times and it is soulful and as Stakee admits “I want to ease people’s minds and give them a little break from reality”.
Broken Side of Time is out now on Ark Recordings and during their recent return to the UK on a promotional tour, 4or The Record was invited to a one-off intimate showcase of songs from the record. Free beverages of the alcoholic kind and a boiler room of a basement venue somehow fitted the music perfectly, and Alberta Cross delivered a heavy dose of ‘soulful rock and roll’ to a London crowd, before they return to the UK for a headline tour in November.
For anyone that recalls Kings of Leon when they quietly arrived in the UK with Youth and Young Manhood cultivating a slow burning undercurrent of support and critical plaudit before becoming the arena rockers they are now, then keep your eye on Alberta Cross. The future of rock and roll?
Here are some stunning live photos from the London showcase.
